Uber launches self-driving taxis in Pittsburgh

Self-driving car by Volvo and Uber Aug 18, 2016 — Network transportation company Uber is able to offer its selective customers self-driving taxis for ordering via app in the downtown of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, USA), Bloomberg said in an article. This is a very important milestone for the segment as so far none of the tech companies including the ones which have been developing autonomous driving option for years (like Google or Tesla) have tried it in full mode in real life.

All the Uber self-driving cars tested in Pittsburgh are supervised by human drivers sitting in the driver seat. Electric cars Volvo XC90 modified with a huge number of cameras, lasers, radars and GPS devices are used in the test. Earlier this year Uber and Volvo agreed to mutually invest USD300 mn in the project to create a fully autonomous car by 2021.
