ST Engineering launches public autonomous shuttle trials in Singapore

Aug 29, 2019 – Singapore’s engineering group ST Engineering has started public on-road tests of self-driving shuttles which can be hailed via the Ride Now Sentosa mobile app or at kiosks on the island of Sentosa, tests will last from August 26 to November 15.

The test route is 5.7 km long, the shuttles will deliver passengers to certain destinations on the island, including Siloso Point, Beach Station, Palawan Beach, Tanjong Beach, and Sentosa Golf Club. Four autonomous vehicles participate in the free trial – two minibuses and two small shuttles.

The technology was developed by ST Engineering‘s Land Systems division in partnership with Singapore’s Department of Transportation and Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC).

Each vehicle will have a safety driver on board, who will be able to take direct control if necessary. The vehicle’s fault system will immediately alert the driver of any problems that have appeared and transfer the control. All the buses will be marked in a special way.
