RWE is one of the largest energy companies in Germany. The company’s headquarters is located in Essen.

RWE is one of the largest players in the renewable business worldwide with a portfolio of wind and solar power assets of about 9 GW as of April 2020. The company wants to invest a net 5 billion euros by 2022 in the continued expansion of renewable energy, with this sum having the potential to rise significantly through contributions from partners. RWE’s focus in terms of growth lies in the markets of Europe and North America as well as in the Asia Pacific region.

Offshore wind energy

In October 2019, RWE Renewables acquired a pipeline of up to four offshore wind projects in the central Polish Baltic Sea as part of its ambitions to enter the Polish offshore market and grow its offshore operations across Europe. The four projects, which are in different development stages, are all located around the Slupsk bank area. In the next few years, development activities will continue, and the construction phase might start as early as 2023.

M&A activities

RWE and E.ON are engaged in a complex asset swap. Following this asset swap, RWE will be primarily active in upstream electricity generation and wholesale markets, whereas E.ON will focus on the distribution and retail of electricity and gas.

In February 2019, the European Commission approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition by RWE of the majority of E.ON’s renewable and nuclear electricity generation assets.

In September 2019, the European Commission approved the acquisition by E.ON of Innogy’s distribution and consumer solutions business as well as certain of its electricity generation assets from RWE under the swap deal.
