Ørsted is a new title of Danish power giant DONG Energy, a leader of the North Europe’s power market, especially in the field of offshore wind power generation. DONG Energy was set up in 2006 as a result of a merger between DONG, Elsam, Energi E2, Nesa, Københavns Energi and Frederiksberg Forsyning.

In October 2018, Ørsted acquired US offshore wind company Deepwater Wind to expand local operations and renamed it Ørsted US Offshore Wind.

In August 2019, a consortium of European companies comprising Ørsted, British hydrogen solutions developer ITM Power, and energy market consultant Element Energy have secured funding from the UK government for the Gigastack feasibility study, a six-month project to investigate the potential delivery of bulk, low-cost and zero-carbon hydrogen.
