France to build debut plant under European battery consortium

Sep 19, 2019 – A pilot EV batteries plant under a pan-European project to counter Asian dominance on the battery market will be located in France, Reuters reported citing a source in the French Ministry of Finance.

France allocated 700 million euros and Germany 1 billion euros for a project, which envisages construction of factories in both countries in the future.

France and Germany asked the European Commission to approve government subsidies for a consortium of project participants, including PSA Peugeot Citroën, its German subsidiary Opel and French battery manufacturer Saft, as well as Siemens and Manz.

EU Energy Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager have endorsed the battery cell initiative.
