Ford Smart Mobility is a Ford Motor Company subsidiary formed to design, build, grow and invest in emerging mobility services.
Ford electric vehicles (EV)
In May 2018, Ford Smart Mobility and China’s car maker Zotye agreed to establish a 50%-50% joint venture to provide smart, customized all-electric vehicle solutions to fleet operators and drivers in China’s fast-growing ride-hailing market.
In October 2019, Ford laid out plans to invest USD11.5 billion in electric vehicles through 2022. It also announced plans to team up with Volkswagen’s Electrify America to develop a network of charging stations, which will be the largest in North America with 12,000 locations and more than 35,000 charge plugs, and with Amazon for installation of home charging setups.
Self-driving option by Ford
In November 2018, Ford Motor started a collaboration with retailer Walmart and Postmates to explore how self-driving vehicles can deliver everyday goods to customers, following other collaborations with Domino’s and Lyft.
In September 2019, Ford Motor added Austin, Texas, to the cities of Miami and Washington, where it planned to launch a commercial transportation service using automated vehicles in 2021. Ford’s self-driving system, tested in Fusion Hybrid sedans, is developed with Argo AI, a Pittsburgh-based startup in which Ford and Volkswagen together hold a majority stake.
