Floating solar projects multiply around globe

Aug 27, 2019 – In the past few years, floating solar has gone from a niche to a viable market as the industry’s appetite for this cutting-edge technology has only intensified, Solar Plaza, organizer of the Floating Solar Conference, which will take place on September 19 in Amsterdam, said in materials to the event.

“Floating solar, or floatovoltaics, initially started with the goal of making better use of underutilized or contaminated bodies of water such as dams and reservoirs. However, new horizons are on sight for floating solar as new technologies enable the placement of solar panels on coastal saltwater, opening a sea of opportunities for renewable energy,” the document read.

There are additional advantages of the technology. Land for solar power projects can be very expensive as it can be used for other purposes such as agriculture. Floating solar has zero costs in that regard. Another aspect is lower grid connection costs by enhanced accessibility to the existing infrastructure. Other benefits include increased output and operational efficiency and a reduction in algae growth.

Asia has been the primary harbor for floating solar projects with more than 800 MW of the facilities installed, but these projects continue to reach new territories.

Ciel et Terre and Sungrow are presently the world’s ultimate leaders in the segment of floating solar with an aggregate share of almost 90% by the number of such projects and over 90% in terms of aggregate capacity.

In 2014-2018, the deployment of floating solar grew more than hundredfold, surpassing the milestone of 1 GW in September 2018 with over 200 facilities installed globally.
